English Moral Stories : Once upon a time in a small village, there lived a poor woodcutter named Jack. He had a tiny hut, a small piece of land, and a family to feed. Every day, Jack went to the forest to cut wood to sell in the market.
One day, while cutting wood near a river, Jack’s axe slipped from his hand and fell into the river. The river was deep, and there was no way for him to retrieve it. He sat by the riverbank, feeling hopeless and sad.
Just when Jack was about to give up, a magical mermaid appeared from the water. She held out a golden axe to him and said, “Is this your axe?”
Jack, surprised by her kindness, replied, “No, that’s not mine.”
The mermaid then brought out a silver axe and asked the same question. Jack, being an honest man, once again said, “No, that’s not mine.”
Finally, the mermaid brought out Jack’s old, rusty axe from the water. Jack’s eyes lit up, and he said, “Yes, that’s mine!”
The mermaid was pleased by Jack’s honesty. She gave him all three axes as a reward for his truthfulness. Jack thanked her and went back home with the magical golden and silver axes.
Jack’s neighbors couldn’t believe their eyes when they saw the valuable axes. They asked him how he had acquired them. Jack told them the entire story about the mermaid and the river.
The neighbors, hearing about the magical mermaid, rushed to the river with their own axes and threw them into the water, hoping to get magical ones in return. But they were dishonest and lied to the mermaid when she asked about the axes.
The mermaid, who valued honesty above all, did not give them any magical axes and disappeared into the river.
Jack’s neighbors learned an important lesson that day. They realized that it is always better to be honest and truthful, just like Jack. They regretted their actions and admired Jack’s integrity.
And so, Jack’s honesty not only brought him magical axes but also the respect and admiration of his neighbors, leaving everyone with a valuable lesson about the importance of honesty in life.
