In just a single month with Inter Miami, the Argentine superstar Lionel Messi has already propelled his team to new heights. With a decisive 4-1 victory over Philadelphia Union on Tuesday, Miami secured a spot in the CONCACAF Leagues Cup final, positioning the club to potentially clinch its first trophy in four seasons of competition.
Messi’s remarkable goal against Philadelphia marked his ninth in merely six games since joining Inter, impressively finding the net in each of his six matches so far, firmly securing his place at the top of the Leagues Cup scoring chart.
Within a few weeks at Inter Miami, Messi has already ascended to the third spot on the club’s all-time scoring list, trailing compatriot Gonzalo Higuain by a mere 20 goals for the top position.
Following an opening goal by Josef Martinez for Miami, Messi delivered his own strike in the 20th minute with a powerful shot from over 30 yards out. The ball eluded the outstretched hands of Union keeper Andre Blake and deflected off the right post into the net.
Spanish veteran Jordi Alba contributed a third goal for Miami during stoppage time in the first half, marking his first goal in four appearances since recently joining Inter. Alejandro Bedoya managed to pull one back for Philadelphia with 17 minutes remaining.
David Ruiz effectively sealed any hopes of a late comeback for Union with Miami’s fourth goal after 84 minutes.
In the other Leagues Cup semifinal on Tuesday, Nashville SC secured a 2-0 victory over Monterrey, setting the stage for a final clash against Miami.
The championship title will be determined when the two teams square off on August 19 in Nashville, Tennessee.
This year, the Leagues Cup, an annual tournament that pits MLS teams against Mexico’s Liga MX, was expanded to include all teams from each league.
