Telugu Flash News

Oh My God 2 (OMG 2) Movie Review: When faced with challenges, place your trust in God. In a landscape where sex education remains a taboo topic, a bold new film emerges with a divine ally by its side.

Amit Rai’s OMG 2 follows in the spiritual footsteps of its predecessor, OMG. The 2014 drama scrutinized the commercialization of faith by depicting an atheist’s legal battle against earthly representatives of god. Akshay Kumar portrayed Krishna, aiding the litigant in both legal victory and renewed belief.

In OMG 2, Akshay Kumar reprises his role as Shiva.

The deity with dreadlocks comes to the aid of a devout Shaivite father when his teenage son is caught in a sensitive situation at school. After initially reprimanding Vivek (Aarush Varma), Kanti (Pankaj Tripathi) comes to comprehend the boy’s dilemma.

Kanti takes the school’s management and others to court, including the chemist, the doctor, and the seller of sexual performance-enhancing products who have perpetuated the belief that sex education is disgraceful and masculinity is linked to physical attributes. Kanti faces off against the cunning defense attorney Kamini (Yami Gautam Dhar) and Judge Purushottam (Pavan Malhotra).

There are parallels with OMG. Like Kanji Mehta from OMG, Kanti represents himself in court, adding a comedic touch to the courtroom scenes. As Krishna did, Shiva intermittently guides Kanti towards enlightenment. Both movies embrace the concept of “dues ex machina.”

Yet, the question of why sex education needed to be approached through a religious lens is not always convincingly answered. In OMG, Kanji seeks retribution after an earthquake devastates his store. His insurance claim is denied on the grounds of being an “act of God.”

The 156-minute OMG 2 consistently maintains its well-intentioned perspective. It navigates its concept carefully, aiming to present a progressive interpretation of Hinduism without causing offense. Nevertheless, the utilization of religion to counter misinformation and promote societal change can sometimes feel forced rather than essential.

Kanti, a recent convert to the value of incorporating sex education into the curriculum rather than relying on the internet, presents it as a panacea for various societal issues. The bullying that contributes to Vivek’s actions is inadequately addressed, both inside and outside the courtroom.

Amit Rai’s screenplay and direction shine in other aspects. Rai, known for Road to Sangam (2010), balances restraint with thoughtfulness in this polemical drama. Some of Kanti’s arguments draw from scriptures and Hinduism’s progressive traditions.

The only instances of heightened emotion come from Geeta Agarwal Sharma, who plays Kanti’s often tearful wife, Indumati. Yet, Sharma delivers an impactful courtroom scene where she counters Kamini’s intimidation with dignity.

The measured tone fits Akshay Kumar particularly well. His evident delight in portraying a wise deity is contagious. Pavan Malhotra also excels as the frequently befuddled judge overseeing a unique case. Brijendra Kala adds a fun cameo as a worldly-wise doctor.

In contrast, Pankaj Tripathi appears somewhat constrained throughout. Kanti’s emotional transformation lacks the sweeping conviction needed to convince us that a deeply religious man has become an ultra-progressive father.
