Canada Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has asserted that there are “credible allegations” implicating the Indian government in the fatal shooting of a prominent Sikh leader in British Columbia. He cited intelligence from national security services.

Trudeau stated that Canadian authorities are investigating whether agents of New Delhi were involved in the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar in June, who was shot dead in Surrey, In a suburb of Vancouver known for its substantial Sikh community, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau emphasized that any participation by a foreign government in the killing of a Canadian citizen on Canadian territory is a clear and unacceptable violation of Canadian sovereignty.

In response, a top Indian diplomat was expelled from Canada, according to Mélanie Joly, the country’s foreign minister, who emphasized their commitment to protecting Canadians and called for India’s full collaboration in the investigation.

Trudeau raised these allegations with India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a meeting in New Delhi last week during the G20 summit.

India’s government has dismissed Trudeau’s statement in the Canadian parliament, as well as Joly’s remarks, as “absurd and motivated.” They emphasized their commitment to the rule of law and criticized Canadian political figures for expressing sympathy for Sikh separatists, whom they described as “Khalistani terrorists and extremists.”

Tensions between India and Canada have been ongoing, with accusations of interference and strained relations due to issues like support for protesting farmers and accusations of harboring Sikh separatists.

The killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, considered a Sikh nationalist, has raised concerns, and the World Sikh Organization of Canada has urged Ottawa to investigate India’s role in his death. British Columbia police identified three suspects last month, but no arrests have been made.

Jagmeet Singh, the leader of Canada’s New Democratic party and a Sikh, has pledged to pursue justice and hold Narendra Modi accountable.

Pro-Khalistan protests in Canada and elsewhere have further strained relations, with attacks on Indian diplomatic missions and protests labeled as “Khalistan freedom rallies.” In response, India has summoned Canada’s high commissioner in New Delhi, accusing Indian diplomats of involvement in Nijjar’s death.
