Karthik Subbaraj returns with his latest film, delving once again into the world of gangsters aspiring to make movies. Back in 2014, Karthik brought us a groundbreaking gangster film, “Jigarthanda,” which redefined the genre in Tamil cinema.
The first installment, set in Madurai, followed the journey of an aspiring filmmaker named Karthik (played by Siddharth), who becomes embroiled with the feared gangster Assault Sethu (Bobby Simha). The twist in the tale occurs when Karthik is captured by the gangster, who insists on starring in a film himself.
Now, in the eagerly awaited sequel, “Jigarthanda DoubleX,” set in the 1970s, we meet another gangster, Pandiyan (Raghava Lawrence), who aspires to conquer Hollywood legend Clint Eastwood and decides to enter the world of cinema. He enlists the assistance of Ray Dwason (played by SJ Suryah), who claims to have been an assistant to the iconic filmmaker Satyajit Ray. Unlike the first part, here the filmmaker willingly collaborates with the gangster. However, external conflicts arise, with Shine Tom Chacko taking on the role of the antagonist, determined to eliminate the gangster once and for all.
Set to grace the screens on November 17, “Jigarthanda DoubleX” doesn’t hold back on meta-commentary, offering witty and critical observations on contemporary cinema trends. Karthik Subbaraj playfully satirizes the phenomenon of pan-Indian cinema. In one instance, a character questions why Ray isn’t making films about virtuous individuals, to which he responds, “People no longer appreciate films about good people.” This statement encapsulates a subtle critique of the broader fascination with gangster narratives, including the film itself.
The film’s musical score by Santhosh Narayanan, known for his contributions to the success of the first installment, is anticipated to once again elevate the cinematic experience in “Jigarthanda DoubleX.”
